Students should strive to get their 25 problem fact practice sheet done in under 2 min. In a few months students will be required to complete 100 addition facts in under 5 min. Try to encourage them to set a timer while they are working so they can monitor their effort toward this goal.

Social Studies/Science:
S.S. Ch. 4 and Science Ch. 5
Guiding questions: What is geography? What is a landform?
As a final assessment, students will make different landforms out of clay. This will all take place at school. I just want to give you a heads up about the upcoming assessment. They will need to create at least 6 different landforms, paint their project and provide labels. Look for a picture review with definition study guide to come home early in the week.

Writing: We will focus on writing letters to friends and family.
Students will continue to practice the three writing hooks they have learned so far (using a question, interesting fact, and description).

Art:
Finish Jug Masks (experiencing different media). These are turning out GREAT! We will add hair on Monday and then we are going to try to put them on display in the hallway.
Start Landscapes (lines and patterns)

Important Information/Reminders:

October is a busy month; make sure you check the school calendar! We have a morning Art Museum field trip scheduled for October 21st. I am looking for 3 chaperones. Our visit will be lead by a docent, all the chaperone will need to do is walk around with their group of students, offering guidance and reminders to the second graders. You need to have a current background check on file in order to help. They are valid for 1 year from the original request date. Please contact Michelle Thomason at mthomason@zionharvester.org in our business office if you wish to update your file. The bus will leave at 9:30 and we will return at 11:30. Students will need to bring a cold lunch because we will eat in our classroom when we return to school. Our Harvest Party will take place that same afternoon.

Whole school activities:
Trunk-or-Treat (Oct. 7th), short week Oct. 10th-14th due to educators conference, the Harvest Party (Oct. 21), end of the first quarter (Oct. 21), the Bobcat Shuffle (Oct. 22), and Parent Teacher Conferences (Oct. 28)

Reflecting on our week:
We started our Keyboarding program this week. Students begin the process of learning to type in second grade.
The Communities Project is finally finished! The project managers presented their communities to the whole class earlier this week. The display will come down on Monday so try to grab a look at them before Sunday School this weekend.

The jug masks look great! Each student is adding their own style. I hope to put these on display in the hallway this week...I just have to figure out how to get them to hang!

We were given a caterpillar last week by an old student of mine who is now in 4th grade. This created a buzz of learning in the classroom. We now have a chrysalis and a fuzzy caterpillar in our butterfly net. The students have done all the research and prepared the necessary habitat. It has been fun watching them take ownership of their own learning! By the way, Abby found out our caterpillar will be a moth called an American dagger. It is exciting to compare an actual chrysalis and a cocoon side by side.
