Reflecting on our week:
This week we learned a lot about our country. We talked about elections, used a venn diagram to compare and contrast our presidential candidates, and learned a lot about what it means to be the President of the United States.
We learned about the meaning of Veterans Day and gave thanks to the men and women who gave up so much to protect our freedom. Our Faith Family time was dedicated to praying for the men and women who are currently serving in our military. We made Christmas cards that will be sent around the world to remind soldiers that they are loved by God and appreciated by the children and staff of Zion Lutheran Church and School. In addition, second grade sent thank you letters and paintings to Veterans, expressing our gratitude for their sacrifice and service.
We finished our Natural Disaster science unit by answering our guiding question, "How does the earth change quickly?" Students used an app called Snapguide to show what they have learned during this unit. Students followed a rubric to create a guide explaining how the earth can change quickly. While this type of assessment takes much longer than a paper/pencil test, it shows me where misconceptions and confusion have left their mark. I was able to clear up a few things while this information is in the forefront of their mind, as opposed to letting it take hold for the next couple of years until the topic is discussed again. I have printed the guides and they are on display in the hallway. Look for them to come home with their grading rubric next week.
We were so involved in working on our Snapguides that I completely forgot to meet Mr. Debrick in the school library for some special reading time on Thursday. He loves to spend time with the students so much that he made a special stop by our classroom on Friday to make it up. He was impressed to hear that we were so engrossed in our learning that we lost track of time, so he gave us a pass on that. The students were so excited that he didn't pass on sharing his story with us. They loved listening to the fun Thanksgiving turkey story he picked out to share with us.
